Wood Decomposition: Home Analysis and Replacement
After a thorough Home Analysis was completed, wood rot was found to have permeated much of the structure. New materials were added and coated with a custom protective stain.
The End Result: After restoration from structural decay, the building was brought back to life with our precision and finishing touches.
In this photo, you can see years of water and insect damage that left the foundation of this house in jeopardy. Carpenters before us had glossed over this issue and covered it up without going far enough. In our experience, this is all-too-common.
The beam was subsequently replaced along with the panels around it. Many homes can appear to be in good condition from the outside while underneath they are rapidly deteriorating. Keeping a tight exterior finish with proper air flow on the inside is crucial to the long term integrity of the home.
The process of cutting out and replacing continues further around the base of the home. A thorough Home Analysis can often detect these issues in advance.
Insects absolutely thrive in the environment of decomposing wood. Carpenter ants attack decomposing wood and can easily move between hard wood and soft wood. Ants weaken supports and bore tunnels through insulation as can be seen to the right.
Due to the age and nature of the material used for this foundation, we applied our custom stain to help protect against future weather and insect issues.
Painting has an enormous benefit towards a structures long term resistance to weather. Staining is actually one step before painting. Shown here is kiln-dried wood framing which has fallen susceptible to a top plate seam between two adjoining Azek boards. Often times the finish work is not properly sealed with caulking or joints are not accounted for as possible leak areas to frame damage.
The further we removed layers from this mezzanine the more wood decomposition was revealed. Many components of this home were found to be in a state of disrepair within 10yrs due to neglect during construction.
